First of all, please introduce who you are and what you do when you’re not babysitting?
I’m Courtney, I’m currently working as a Nanny to 3 lovely boys. I also run Fernweh which is a coffee subscription business.
What was it that got you interested in becoming a babysitter?
I love kids, they are all unique in their own way. I enjoy the way they see the world, and how they act upon it.
What is it about working with children that you look forward to the most?
The thing I look forward to most is that it’s constantly different. It’s constantly changing because they constantly grow and change. It’s not the same monotonous thing each day.
What is the proudest moment you’ve had so far as a babysitter?
Kids have such wild imaginations and most of the time want to play games. There were these kids that I looked after and each time I arrived they were so excited. They wanted to play games as soon as I walked in the door. It was so nice to be asked back to play games and engage with their excitement.
Is there anything you’ve learnt from the child/ren you babysit, instead of the other way around?
Kids are so smart and sensitive, especially when you first babysit them, because they don’t know you. I’ve learned to read the situation and let the kids take the lead instead of telling them to do what I think they should do.
Has there ever been a time where you thought ‘I can’t do this’ or ‘ahh this is a hard one’ and how have you gotten around that?
There have definitely been moments like these but for me when these situations arise I take a step back and breathe and think about how I can make this situation better.
What would you say to parents who are a bit nervous about leaving their child/ren with a sitter for the first time?
I always want the babysitting experience to be easy and comfortable for everyone involved. So if the parents are a bit nervous I would offer to send them updates and photos. Once they knew I was a nanny and have a lot of experience they were a bit more at ease which was great!
What would your advice be for anyone who is thinking of joining The Babysitters Club as a sitter? And why?
It’s been an amazing experience, if you want experience with a range of families, I highly recommend joining to connect with different age kids. The families are amazing and the kids are so much fun.
Finally, what would you say has been the biggest impact on other areas of your life from being a babysitter?
The biggest impact that babysitting has had in my life has been in how I conduct myself, knowing that I am representing a company and other people. It has also helped in my job as a Nanny trying different techniques with different age kids has been a great experience.
