Having children is often said to be one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences in life. The exciting moments when our little ones say their first words are precious. Watching our children explore the world with an innocent and inquisitive lens can fill our hearts to the brim. On the flip side of this, the constant pressures of serving a little person who needs our attention almost all of the time can be incredibly exhausting.
Many mothers (and fathers) spend so much energy caring for their children that sometimes, their own wants and needs can be neglected. Of course, our children are our number 1 priority in our lives, but don’t forget – everybody needs a little looking after sometimes – including you.
Let this article be a gentle reminder that it is not selfish to take time out to exercise. It is not selfish to take time out to connect with your friends, to have a date night, to cook your favourite meal just because it’s your favorite, not somebody elses. It is, every once and a while, necessary.
Remember – our kids are watching us. They have an incredible ability to soak up our own habits, projections, and energies. They watch what we do, they watch how we treat them, and they watch how we treat ourselves.
If we want to model to our children, that taking care of ourselves should be a top priority if we want to be the best we can be, then we simply need to do it too.
When we look after our own needs, we are able to give those around us a more authentic, enthusiastic and interactive version of ourselves. When we look after our own needs, we have more patience, more insight, and can act with more empathy.
So next time you are completely run off your feet don’t forget to honor those needs. Support yourself so that you can the parent that you aspire to be.
